Advice on Measles

Outbreaks of measles have been increasing in the last two years with an annual total of 1,920 cases confirmed in 2012, the highest annual figure since 1994.  In the first 3 months of 2013, 587 cases were confirmed in England. The difference now is that there is a high rate of cases in teenagers, which has not been seen in previous years.

We want to make sure that anyone who has not yet been vaccinated against measles, or who did not have the full course of two vaccinations, through the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination programme, now has the opportunity to visit their GP practice to receive the vaccination course.  The campaign will run until the autumn.

If you are among the following groups and either are not sure whether you have been vaccinated or know that you have not had one or both vaccinations for MMR, please contact your GP practice:

  • Children and young people between the age of 10 and 16 years who have never been vaccinated or who have only had one dose of MMR
  • Parents and guardians of the children and young people
